A Relentlessly Cheerful Giveaway!

by Lizz on June 25, 2012

I’m a geek.
I’ve talked about this before, so unless this is your first time to my blog (in which case, WELCOME!) you already know this about me. I embrace the crazy as much as I can, and sometimes, I just can’t resist and must give in.
As I write this, the back of my brain is planning my outfit for tomorrow morning… much like high school, I’m starting a new job tomorrow (Yay!) and can’t decide what to wear.
WTH does my outfit tomorrow have to do with a giveaway? Let me tell you!
My new job involves me working at home a few days a week, so I’ve been thinking a lot lately about how I can set up our spare room as a good office space that will keep me productive and focused.
First things first, of course, I need a theme and some art!

Enter James Hance. There’s a decent chance you’ve seen some of his work before, working its way down your News feed on Facebook. I’d seen what I’d call his most “iconic” piece a number of times, but never knew the artist. It’s this one:
A little bit Star Wars, a little bit Winnie the Pooh adds up to a whole lot of awesome in my book! This painting is part of a whole collection James has done, along with a story book, called “Wookiee the Chew, the House at Chew Corner” and truly, I’m in love with these pieces!

So anyway, back to my home office. Jamie and I both work from home at least some of the time, so I can’t go all girly in my design. I thought some of this stuff would be perfect! It speaks to the geek in both of us, and I was thrilled to discover more than just Star Wars once I got further into James’ site… Back to the Future, the Muppets, Up, Winnie the Pooh, Calvin and Hobbes… Doctor Who.

The Doctor and I go way back, at least 7 years, which, in Time Lord Time is either like a million years or 2 seconds. Or both.

Anyway.

Jamie and I are both huge gigantic Doctor Who fans, and I loved this piece that combined two of our favorites, Back to the Future and Doctor Who! I got my prints in the mail yesterday, and went out today to get frames, because I just couldn’t wait!

And as if this and all of the other Whovian art wasn’t enough to make your (my!) head spin, James has teamed up with the infamous Leila Miyamoto (aka @DontSpkWhinese) for a new project, “Goodnight Pond,” a parody book for the next hopeful companion, and they tell me it’s coming out any minute now!

I know, you just want to know how you can win your own little bit of James Hance geekery, right? It’s SO easy! Just go take a peek at James’ site and tell me which of the art prints is your favorite! If you’re my lucky winner, you’ll get not one, not two, but FIVE prints of your choice! I actually have one framed in my living room right now that I’m giving as a wedding present this summer (Shhhh! Don’t tell the bride and groom!) so these are lovely gifts to give as well!

I’ve included some additional ways to earn entries, so you can enter as many times as possible!

a Rafflecopter giveaway

Disclosure: I received 4 art prints and a copy of “Wookiee the Chew” in exchange for writing this post and hosting this giveaway. No other compensation was received, and honestly, I’d have done it without the free art! (Just don’t tell James!)

There’s just no picking a stand-alone favorite, they’re all so indescribably wonderful! Smugglers of the Labyrinth, a Biped and His Boy, Doctor of Steel, Little Rebels, Someone Who Loves You, Amy & Doc….These are the rare sort of thing that warms my heart no matter how cold my world may get! If I simply must identify a favorite on that page, one that embodies everything I love about Hance’s brilliant work, it’d have to be A Most Bold Adventure.

Calvin & Hobbes. It was the first James Hance I ever saw, and I had to have it for my own little Calvin. It looked so much like him it brought tears to my eyes. It blew me away, Calvin having always been one of my faves, and my little man being the spitting image.

Then there are the Wookie the Chew ones like “The Hunt” and “The Force.” Next I would choose “Destroy All Monsters!” And if “Time for Bed” and “Supergrover”were still in print I would add those to the list, hahah….

I have always had a soft spot for Superman and I’ve had a similar spot for Super-Grover almost as long so, naturally, “The Man & The Muppet Of Steel” would have to be my absolute favorite but the “Flower of the Force” series would make a pretty sweet tryptic! In all honesty, you could close your eyes and through a dart at these images and anything that it landed on would make a fine addition to any wall (I do not recommend testing this out because you could buy one of each print for less than it would cost to replace your laptop… plus you’d have to throw the dart *really* hard to make it pierce glass)

My favorite is Someone Who Loves You – it captures the emotion of Up so beautifully. But James Hance does such wonderful work, it’s heed to pick just one.

I would have to say At-ore is the best, my favorite Pooh character and Favorite Star Wars Vehicle. With The Last being a close second yet again favorite Star Wars vehicle crossed with on of my all time favorite movies The Last Unicorn!

I always think of the Grover one called “Fuzzy and red white and blue” …or something. I am forever telling people about the wookie the chew stuff though. There is one with him carrying the RT-DT piglet as he is chased by little TIE Fighter bees. Hance, you flippin’ genius!

hello lizz. um… i’m not good at introductions. in fact, i’m really awkward all the way around. yes, i am here for the print contest, but i didn’t want to leave a reply that would get lost in the sea of comments on your blog, so i wrote it in the form of a novella in the hopes that you would see it shadowing over everyone else. i’ve been a huge fan of james hance since he began posting his work on the internet a few years back, and seeing this contest, i can’t say that i’m jumping at the offer because i don’t want to be greedy, but i want to put my name in the hat, seeing as i am pretty poor at the moment and would love to (hopefully) have a few more prints to go with the 2 i already have on my wall. sorry for taking up so much time. my favorite print went out of print (terrible joke, i know) a while back, but it was called: Fuzzy & Red, White & Blue. i thank you for letting me take up so much of your time with my inane rambling, so i will leave you, wishing you godspeed in all your wanderings.

Hands down, Calvin and Hobbes.

I got one for my dad because we both love the strip (he even got a stuffed tiger once and promptly named it Hobbes), then got one for myself. It perfectly encapsulates the unbridled joy of the comic strip while showing us a brief glimpse of what Calvin saw every day. It’s just perfect.

I’d say my favorite is Amy and the Doc, which is an amalgam of my most beloved comic (calvin and hobbes) and my first doctor (which they say you never forget). Calvin and Hobbes is a great comic because it went past the bonds of one liners and simple characters, dealt with larger issues and the characters though physically immature were very deep intellectually. They quoted shakespeare, they passed through Rembrandt inspired paintings and fought dinosaurs that drive bomber jets. Plus, just like the Doctor, all of time and space was his playground. Granted his time travel box was more cardboard than English police, but what mattered was where it took them and the adventures it would cause.
