Oh, digital age.
There are so many things I love about you.
I can Google Hangout my friends all over the world, share what I’m having for lunch with all 500 of my Instagram followers, and have virtual drinks with a thousand of my nearest and dearest on Twitter.
But sometimes? A girl misses real mail.
When I was a kid, I remember the joy of getting something in the mail. It might have been Highlights magazine, or Ranger Rick, or if I was really lucky, a card from Grammy and Grampy (because that almost always had a dollar or more in it!)
We can get so caught up in rush of the everyday, it’s easy to forget the simple thrill of sending or receiving an actual greeting card. That’s why I was overjoyed to accept Hallmark’s “Get Carded” challenge, to send seven cards in seven days.
They sent me a lovely packet of cards to send, and Max and I had a blast talking about who to send them to. I mailed off a crazy musical card to a birthday twin friend, “have fun at summer camp” cards to our two closest kiddos, and a few miscellaneous cards to other friends who have touched me, or meant something to me in some way.
Max and I worked at the same time (I couldn’t get him to actually write *in* the cards, for some unknown reason) and it was always pretty easy to come up with words to say, but usually, the card had me covered.
I love the idea of this challenge, and it’s prompted me to do more with good old-fashioned pen and paper. I took actual notes at BlogHer last month, and back to drafting my blog posts in longhand in a notebook, and I have taken more than a few detours down the card aisle to see what jumps out at me.
Cards aren’t just boring little pieces of paper any more, either. I got cards with wall hanging art, music, stickers, even animation! (Seriously! Take a look at the Vine video below! Crazytown!)
It’s such a little investment, of both money and time, to make such a difference in someone’s day! Hallmark only challenged me to send seven cards, but they gave me 10 to use. I just might have to send out these other three as well! Will it come to you?
Blogger friends! Do you want to take the Get Carded challenge? Go here to apply and maybe you’ll get the chance to brighten a few days as well! (If you need my address, just let me know! )
Exciting update! I get to give away a card pack similar to the one I received! WOO HOO! I love getting to give you guys stuff! To enter, just leave a comment telling me about a card you’ve received that really struck you. It could have been for a special occasion, or just a random day brightener! Let me hear it! I’ll have random.org choose a winner at the end of the week, so Friday August 16! Enter now!
Disclaimer: Hallmark provided me with greeting cards and stamps so that I could participate in this challenge. No further compensation was received. I chose who to send the cards to, but I’m still on the lookout for a Duck Dynasty fan with a birthday coming up, so suggestions are welcome!
